Digital Print & Finishing

How do I properly prepare a print ready file?

A file is considered print ready when received in .pdf format, in CMYK colours, with crop marks. Common mistakes are: file is not a .pdf; file is designed with RGB or SPOT colours; or the file lacks proper bleed (area for images that extend to the edge of a page).

What is CMYK?

CMYK is an acronym that stands for: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black). These four colours are used in printing in a subtractive process to create all colours for printing.

What is RGB?

RGB is an acronym that stands for: Red, Green, Blue. These three colours are used in an additive light process for projecting colour on a screen.

How much bleed area do I need?

Standard bleed area is 1/8 (.125) inches (approx. 3mm).

What is a vector graphic?

A vector graphic is essentially a mathematical formula for creating lines and shapes on a computer. Most company logos are a vector file, and can be scaled to any size without loss of quality. Common vector graphic file formats are: .ai; .eps; .pdf. This is in contrast to a raster graphic.

What is a raster graphic?

A raster graphic is an array of pixels of various colours that form an image. These files are commonly created by digital cameras and photograph scanners. Common raster graphic file formats are: .jpg; .tif; .psd; .gif
